09/12/2010 The President of the Republic His Excellency continued celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the Armed Forces at the Bamenda-Bafut Airport and decided to prolong his stay in Bamenda till Friday 10 December 2010
The days activities started early for the Head of State as he started with a visit to the monument for the unknown soldier situated Up Station at the junction below the customs office. The Head of State unveiled a statute built in honour of service men, depicting a soldier with a bag strung behind him and carrying light arms. He then laid a wreath in honour of all the soldiers who lost their lives in active service to the nation.
President Paul BIYA then drove to the Bamenda-Bafut Airport where the day’s activities were to take place. The welcome by the Minister Defense Mr. Edgar Alain MEBE NGOH was followed by full military honours. The Head of State and Madam Chantal BIYA then took the seats to watch the intricate military display, which consisted in the simulation of the liberation of hostages taken in an airplane that was diverted to the Bamenda-Bafut Airport.
Before the display, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces thanked the President of the Republic for all the innovations he announced yesterday which will go a long way to improve the working condition of soldiers. He reassured the Commander in Chief of the total support of the Armed Forces and their continued loyalty.
The Head of State and Madam Chantal BIYA watched as the Armed Forces simulated the exchange with the terrorists, the torments they gave the hostages and the eventual liberation by units of the Gendarmerie and the Special Intervention Brigade. Special troops also did parachute displays as the Air Force used helicopters and other planes to drop soldiers from the air as part of the display.
After the display, President Paul BIYA and the First Lady went round all the expositions stands prepared by the various services of the Armed Forces. They visited the stands of the airforce, the navy, the fire brigade, the Special Intervention Brigade, the Paratroopers, the Engineering Corps, the Artillery Division, the Health Services and the Former Servicemen, amongst many others.
The activities at the airport ended with a meal provided for the occasion by the Armed Forces. President Paul BIYA and Madam Chantal BIYA shared in the food and wine with the entire army present at the airport.
The Head of State, who originally was scheduled to take off to Yaoundé at the end of the day, rather opted to stay another night in Bamenda. Another sign that he is at ease in this town that he has chosen to be his second home and another special offer to the people of the North West Region and the Cameroon Armed Forces.
